During the 19th century, Swedish Master Hatters travelled to France, absorbing the highly specialised manufacturing techniques, mastering the precision tools, and establishing the deep knowledge required to produce the authentic gossamer calico body. This advancement was inextricably linked to the French production of silk plush (felb), the most exclusive textile of the era. Whilst many nations allowed these specialized skills to be swallowed by industrialisation, Sweden’s strict Journeyman and Master Craftsman system has ensured that this master craft—historically preserved through the art of the silk plush hatter (felbhattmakare)—has been passed down entirely unaltered through generations.
Thanks to an uninterrupted, annual production of the traditional gossamer calico body, our workshops have successfully preserved the complete manufacturing, restoration, and repair techniques for all historical headwear. This unbroken continuity ensures the survival of:

The UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Initiative
The nation holds a long and proud tradition of premium hat manufacturing, where the historic export of Swedish-made top hats was globally sought-after as a benchmark of the highest professional skill and superior quality. The core of this heritage remains the production of the traditional gossamer calico body, using a specific calico base saturated with hand-formulated shellac compounds. The association is currently working towards having the traditional hatter craftsmanship, material chemistry, and manual production of the gossamer calico body officially recognised and listed as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Our foundation stands upon an unshakeable ethical cornerstone: whilst commercial markets declare that everyone has a price, we firmly maintain that everyone and everything has a value. The sacred knowledge of our trade is not a commodity to be bartered, nor is it for sale to the highest bidder; the ancestral knowledge belongs exclusively to the craft itself.
To safeguard an endangered craft in its entirety, one must look beyond temporary economic metrics, market reports, and sales figures. The preservation of world-unique artisan techniques requires a profound, collective commitment, wherein both private enterprises and historic institutions unite to strengthen and elevate this priceless heritage, both within Sweden and across the global stage.

To strengthen and expand our international knowledge base, the association is seeking connection with individuals who possess knowledge of traditional hatter techniques, or who have family lineages connected to a traditional hatter. By working across borders, we aim to map and illuminate the global history of the trade.
